Ciherang Village is one of the villages prone to landslides. About six months ago there was a landslide in the village and hit several families. Disasters make people lose their property and lose their sources of livelihood.

The disaster also resulted in the emergence of various mental health problems, especially sadness, anxiety, loss of income sources which have the potential to cause more serious mental health problems.

Faculty of Nursing UI conducts socialization and community empowerment programs that directly provide lessons for the community to improve their ability to deal with disaster trauma.

Together with village officials and program health cadres, they provide cadres with an understanding of trauma prevention and stress management. Followed by field practice assisting health cadres to visit residents to detect mental health disorders and continued with the application of stress management interventions to overcome post-disaster trauma.

“The presence of health cadres is the main pillar in improving the health status of the people in the region,” said Prof. Achir Yani

One of the service members and a doctoral student of FoN UI Abdul Wakhid added, this community engagement and empowerment activity is the first step to increase family resilience.

“Furthermore, it can be followed up with activities to ensure the sustainability of health programs such as improving community mental health, improving mental health in children and adolescents, and also improving mental health in other special groups,” he said.
