” Altruism (put others first): A nurse always puts the patient’s interests above her own and tries to care for the welfare of others. ”

Altruism is one of the fundamental values in professional nursing practice that must be owned by nurses in addition to Aesthetics (beauty), Equality (equality), Freedom (freedom), Human dignity (human dignity), Justice (fairness) and Truth (truth). When someone takes nursing education and takes the nurse’s oath, these values must be upheld in carrying out their nursing practice.

So what about the attitude of nurses during this Covid-19 pandemic? The answer is clear that the attitudes of nurses, especially Indonesian nurses, are:

First, comply with the rules issued by the Government, namely Permenkes No. 9 of 2020 concerning PSBB Guidelines in the context of Accelerating the Handling of Covid-19 which is a continuation of PP No. 21 concerning PSBB in the Context of Accelerating Handling of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

This is evidenced by the absence of national and international events such as seminars, workshops, training, scientific meetings, and even the National Conference (Munas) scheduled for April in Bali which was also postponed because these events could be attended by tens to thousands of nurses. Indonesia to accelerate the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Second, together with other health teams, they are at the forefront of providing services for Covid-19 patients. It has even become the main profession in handling this deadly virus outbreak.

Services are provided from promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative efforts. At the community level with their Village/RW nurses, Puskesmas and hospitals simultaneously provide services to the general public, OTG, ODP and PDP in the form of education and direct handling of Covid-19 sufferers.

Many stories from nurse colleagues who provide services for Covid-19 patients have been published by the mass media. Feelings of anxiety, fear of being infected and transmitting to loved ones are the main things they feel. Another feeling is that nurses as service providers who have direct contact with Covid-19 patients are required to stay away from their families, wives and children, this adds to the weight of their struggle.

At a time when the general public is required to stay at home, nurses and other health workers are working hard to provide services to Covid-19 patients and general patients in need.

It is true that it is the duty of the nursing profession, but if they could choose to stay at home, of course, nurse colleagues would choose to gather with their family and obey the government’s call to stay at home with their loved ones instead of continuing to work with the risk of being infected.

When the author was seconded in the Covid-19 ICU service due to a shortage of nurses, even though there was no direct contact with patients, these feelings emerged, sincere intentions and altruism were what strengthened him in carrying out this humanitarian task.

The news of the death of a hero of humanity, fellow nurses who reached twenty people did not make the spirit slack but instead added to the enthusiasm to provide quality services and prioritize patient and staff safety.

Provision of competence and always working based on SOP is the main thing to do. PPNI (Indonesian National Nurses Association) issues Covid-19 patient service standards in 25 (twenty five) nurse scientific areas that must be adhered to. Health service facilities, both at the Puskesmas and the hospital, issue a Service Policy up to SOPs that must be carried out by officers, including nurses.

Although it is felt that the services for Covid-19 patients are quite heavy, they always pay attention to quality, patient and staff safety. Important points that must be considered are listed in Permenkes No. 11 of 2017 concerning patient safety articles 4 and 5. Patient safety standards and targets are the main thing to do.

Patient Safety Standards consist of: a. patient rights; b. education for patients and families; c. Patient safety in continuity of service; d. use of performance improvement methods to evaluate and improve Patient Safety; e. leadership role in improving Patient Safety; f. education for staff on Patient Safety and g. communication is key for staff to achieve Patient Safety.

Patient Safety Goals are achieved by: a. correctly identifying patients; b. improve effective communication; c. increase the safety of drugs that must be watched out for; d. ensure the correct surgical site, correct procedure, correct surgery on the right patient; e. reduce the risk of infection due to health care and f. reduce the risk of patient injury due to falls.

The safety of patients (Individuals, Families, Groups and Communities) and officers will determine the acceleration of handling COVID-19 by breaking the chain of transmission. So that patients treated with Covid-19 can recover and the transmission that occurs can be prevented.

The synergy between the government, health workers and the community by always carrying out their respective roles and functions will accelerate the resolution of the “Covid-19 Pandemic Storm”.

The struggle of health workers is meaningless without the support of the active participation of the community in overcoming this pandemic. Public care and support is very much needed in accelerating the handling of Covid-19, namely by always complying with the rules issued by the government and education issued by professional organizations of health workers.

The synergy between the government, health workers and the community by always carrying out their respective roles and functions will accelerate the resolution of the “Covid-19 Pandemic Storm”.

Rest assured… Together we can definitely get through these difficult times. By being patient, holding back, increasing a sense of caring for each other, this pandemic condition will end soon. Next, we will organize a new Indonesian life in overcoming the impacts caused by this pandemic in terms of economic, political, social, cultural and defense recovery.

“INDONESIA CAN DO, INDONESIA DO NOT GIVE UP”

Greetings healthy and always enthusiastic
