SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

University Measures Towards Affordable and Clean Energy

Faculty of Nursing Universitas Indonesia has one building at Depok campus. The building of FoN UI was built following the energy efficiency standards. On the right, left, front, and back of the building there are huge windows that make sunlight enter the building easily. Most rooms in Faculty of Nursing UI use sunlight as source of light on day time. Moreover, the windows in the rooms can be opened to allow natural air transfer in and out of the rooms. This reduce the use of energy in day time.

FoN UI has a policy concerning energy efficiency program. It is listed in the Decree of Dean FoN UI number 5670/UN2.F12.D/HKP.02.04/2018 concerning Policy of Go Green Implementation in FoN UI. This policy is also in line with Dean FoN UI’s Guideline and Procedures on Energy and Water Saving Implementation in FoN UI Area.

Energy-Efficient Equipment Usage

Pictures below show that Faculty of Nursing uses LED lamps in the lobby of every floor in FoN UI building (floor 1-8) and FoN UI auditorium. Some rooms in FoN UI still use electronic devices such as electric fan and refrigerator. These electronic devices are distributed in lactation room, praying room, SIMAK BMN room and ATK storeroom. Moreover, motion sensor lamps are also installed in FoN UI toilets to save electricy. FoN UI also saves energy by using elevator alternatingly in between semester when learning process is inactive, and encourages electric saving.

Glass House Gas Emission Reduction Program

The reduction of carbon and gas emission programs in FoN UI has been done by implementing energy saving programs, motor vehicle reduction, plastic usage reduction, paper usage reduction, organic waste treatment, and reforestation in collaboration with the students.

To reduce CO2 and Nitrite Oxide (N2o) emission from fossil fuel burning, FoN UI provides faculty bicycle and UI bicycle as a mean of transportation for campus community members. FoN UI also prohibits the use of plastic straw in campus to reduce plastic usage, promotes to use and bring tumbler for students and staff, reduces paper towels, and promotes saving paper by using both sides of paper in printing document draft.

Each year, during faculty academic system orientation (PSAF), FoN UI freshmen are involved in reforestation by bringing plants to campus in order to reduce CO2. In addition, plants are used as hedging in parking area to reduce direct pollution from motor vehicle. FoN UI Building is also surrounded by propagating plants that adds to the greeneries in FoN UI perimeter. Plants are also found in every building in every floor and in some of the rooms.

Conservation Programs At The Faculty

Faculty of Nursing uses open area behind the building to plant hydroponic plants (water convolvulus, red coxcomb, spinach, and caisim) which grow prolifically, ready to be harvested. Plants are also used as hedges in parking area to reduce direct pollution from motor vehicle. In addition, FoN UI building is also surrounded by propagated vines area which add greeneries to FoN UI area. On the back wall of the building there are vines which can be used as traditional medicinal herbs. Green revolution is also implemented by putting plants in every floor inside the building and in some of the rooms.

The energy consumption is reduced by using energy-efficient light bulbs, motion sensor light bulbs, and notices to turn off the electricity. On student holidays in between semester periods and also on the pandemic, only one elevator is used.

FoN UI also has Solar Panels as Solar Cell that generates 18,700 WP (Watt Peak) of energy. The solar cell is connected to an electrical panel so that the energy it generates can be used to reduce the electricity usage load in FoN UI.
