"Just a little tired and I get a headache." That's a phrase we often hear from our parents. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is often considered a "normal illness" that comes with the aging process. In reality, if left uncontrolled, hypertension can be a gateway to various dangerous diseases like stroke, heart failure, and even kidney problems.
In Indonesia, hypertension ranks as the top chronic disease among the elderly. Data from 2022 shows that 63.2% of the elderly population suffers from hypertension., the highest among any age group. This figure is not just a statistic; it's a reality that many families experience. Countless children and grandchildren are confused about how to support their parents in maintaining their health in their golden years.
Recognizing this, mahasiswa Magister Keperawatan Gerontik Fakultas Ilmu Keperawatan Universitas Indonesia (FIK UI), Ns. Indira Mastura Pulungan, providing health education for the elderly through Program Layanan Tenteram Senior Care. An activity themed "Self-Care for the Elderly with Hypertension" was held at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) Administration Building, and was attended by dozens of elderly people, caregivers, family members, and volunteers.
During the educational session, Indira didn't just share theory; she also invited participants to understand a simple healthy lifestyle that can be practiced daily: a routine morning walk, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and keeping emotions happy by actively socializing.
"Often, what makes hypertension worse isn't just poor diet or lack of exercise, but also psychological factors like stress and anxiety. So, keeping your mind calm is also important," Indira said to the participants.
The elderly participants appeared enthusiastic as they shared stories about their experiences. Some talked about their routine of taking medication, while others expressed fear when their blood pressure soared. This two-way discussion made the educational session feel warm and provided a space for the elderly to support one another.
In addition to the elderly, this activity also emphasized the role of family and caregivers. "Caring for the elderly is not just the responsibility of health professionals. The family is the front line," Indira asserted. With the right knowledge, families can be more vigilant in recognizing the danger signs of hypertension, such as a severe headache, blurred vision, or shortness of breath, so the elderly can receive immediate medical help.
The Tenteram Senior Care Service Program is a platform for the elderly to receive friendly, educational, and continuous health support. The presence of FIK UI students in this program is a clear example of the academic community's role in helping society face health challenges in old age.
It is hoped that this activity will not only stop in the educational space but will also be able to inspire families to create a healthy, peaceful, and supportive home environment for the elderly.
"If we are healthy, our children and grandchildren are also happy," said one of the participants with a relieved smile after attending the event.
