The Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Indonesia (FoN UI), has once again demonstrated its commitment as a leading and impactful nursing education institution on the global stage through its role in the development of the Sigma Alpha Beta Lambda at-Large Chapter #609 in Indonesia. Based on a spirit of collaboration and academic excellence, FoN UI contributed to the successful execution of a series of Sigma activities, including new member inductions, an international webinar, and a chapter meeting, all held on May 27, 2025. In Indonesia, Sigma Nursing Global Excellence was established in 2022 through a collaboration between FoN UI and the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Padjajaran.
A total of 14 inductees, consisting of 5 nurse leaders and 9 nursing students, were officially inducted into the international honor society, Sigma. The rigorous selection process, based on portfolios and professional track records as nurses or nursing students, underscores the importance of commitment to the advancement of evidence-based nursing science and practice. Upon official membership, the inductees received their membership cards and Sigma cords as a symbol of honor and recognition for their dedication and contributions to the world of nursing. This event was a crucial moment in building professional networks across countries and strengthening the leadership of Indonesian nurses on the international stage.
The Chapter President, Dessie Wanda, S.Kp., M.N., Ph.D.—who is also a lecturer and researcher at FoN UI—encouraged all Sigma members, both professional nurses and students, to actively utilize the diverse scientific and self-development resources available on the Sigma platform.
"I invite all members, both nurse leaders and students, to actively explore the various resources available on the Sigma platform, ranging from online courses and professional discussion forums to international grant opportunities. This membership is not just a symbol, but a platform to grow and contribute concretely to the development of nursing based on science and innovation," said Dessie.
This event also featured an international webinar titled "Charting the Future: How Nurses Are Driving the AI Transformation in Healthcare". The webinar was delivered by Dr. Maxim Topaz, PhD, RN, MA, FAAN, FACMI, FIAHSI, a nursing technology expert from the School of Nursing, Columbia University, and was moderated by Hening Pujasari, S.Kp., M.Biomed., MANP., Ph.D., who is both the secretary of Sigma Indonesia and a lecturer-researcher at FoN UI. The utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in nursing is believed to accelerate clinical decision-making, improve the quality of nursing documentation, and foster efficiency in patient care globally. This topic was chosen due to its high relevance to the dynamic developments in nursing at the international level. Furthermore, AI is also a key focus in the upcoming Sigma Asia Virtual Webinar, scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in August 2025.
Additionally, during the chapter meeting held as part of the event series, chapter leaders discussed strategies for strengthening the organization and future work plans. The main objective of this chapter meeting was to present the newly elected Sigma president's work program and discuss strategic steps that all members need to take together. A primary focus highlighted was the importance of increasing members' utilization of the Sigma platform. Chapter leaders emphasized that ongoing socialization about how to access and explore the official Sigma website is crucial so that every member can optimally benefit from their membership. This utilization is expected to contribute directly to improving the quality of nursing practice and services in Indonesia.
Through these tangible contributions, FoN UI continues to take on the role of an initiator in developing international professional organizations in nursing. Through their contributions to the Sigma Alpha Beta Lambda at-Large Chapter #609, FoN UI members are expected to increasingly realize the importance of leveraging technological advancements, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), as part of the evidence-based and innovative transformation of nursing. Additionally, this series of activities is also expected to strengthen Sigma's real contribution to the development of the nursing profession, both nationally and internationally.
