Caring for Teenagers, FoN UI Introduces a Program “Keren Tanpa Rokok”

Adolescence is an important stage in a person’s life which is full of challenges and identity struggles. While searching for identity, some teenagers try various things, including following trends that may not always be positive, such as smoking. However, there is a cool group of teenagers who have chosen a better path by turning down cigarettes and focusing on a healthy lifestyle and achievement. As a form of concern for adolescents, the Faculty of Nursing initiated a community service activity regarding the FoN UI “Keren Tanpa Rokok” (KTR) Program which was held at SMPN 1 Depok on August 3, 2023. The aim of the KTR Program is to improve the health status and productivity of adolescents by forming adolescent self-commitment. in resisting smoking behavior. This issue is important to discuss given the large negative impact of smoking on health and based on the 2022 BPS SUSENAS data, West Java Province ranks 12th in the highest presentation of smokers aged ≥ 15 years, namely 32.07% (SUSENAS., 2022). Whereas in the city of Depok itself in 2021 there are 13.46% of smokers aged 15-25 years and data for 2022 illustrates the number of smokers aged > 15 years is 15.70% (BPS Depok, 2023).

The activity was attended by 33 grade 8 students and 2 class teacher delegates. The KTR program is an educational activity about the dangers of smoking which is packaged in several interesting and innovative activity sessions for teenagers. The education begins with expressing the participants’ feelings in responding to smokers around adolescents, both at home, school and other public environments. After expressing the feeling the participants will receive material about “Cigarettes and Youth” by a professional and reliable resource person from the Department of Child Nursing FIK-UI, Dr. Nani Nurhaeni, M.N.

Nani explained what are the dangers of smoking and tips for quitting smoking. “When we want to quit smoking, make sure to stop completely, not gradually. Then give positive suggestions that smoking is not a symbol of manliness or slang, always remember the dangers of smoking and keep yourself busy with useful activities. If you feel “bitter”, replace cigarettes with candy and be diligent in consuming vitamin C drinks. Most importantly, go through hard times without smoking patiently, “said Nani

The next activity is a discussion and sharing session in small groups guided by the service team as a facilitator. In this session, students are guided in discussions and sharing experiences, opinions and expressing a commitment to be ready to become Keren Tanpa Rokok (KTR). The output of the discussion and sharing session activities is story telling as a result of group discussions which are then staged at the end of the activity. The school is very enthusiastic and positively welcomes the community service activity “Cool Youth Program Without Smoking”.

SMPN 1 Depok students expressed their gratitude for this community service activity. “We are very grateful for the education provided. We get to know more deeply how scary the dangers of smoking are, not only that we are also provided with tips and tricks on how to stop smoking. The hope is that we can apply and live a healthier life.” Close students.
