Physical mobility in the elderly tends to decrease because the elderly experience a decrease in biological, physiological and cognitive functions. Bone mass at the age of more than 60 years tends to decrease so that the bones are more fragile and prone to fracture if dropped, hit, and lifted something that normally does not affect the bones (Sherwood, 2016).

Often the elderly face the problem of osteoporosis which is the cause of the incidence of bone fractures due to reduced bone mass. To deal with this problem, efforts to develop health, health services, and treatment efforts are needed (Setiabudhi & Hardwinoto, 2014). Thus, nurses have an important role for the elderly as a preventive and promotive action.

One of the easiest ways to care for limbs is to do range of motion exercises or what is commonly called Range of Motion (ROM) regularly. This ROM exercise aims to train certain joints that are rarely moved by carrying out simple movements according to the ability of the joints, for example at the hinge joint located at the knee, flexion-extension movements can be carried out by bending the leg and bringing it towards the back of the thigh, then returning legs to their original position (Berman et al., 2022). This exercise can also be done independently without the help of tools so that it is more efficient in its implementation.

Interventions in the form of education and demonstrations related to ROM exercises for the elderly need to be carried out so that the limbs of the elderly are maintained. Departing from this, FoN UI Serving attended the Tresna Werdha Social Institution (PSTW) Budi Mulia 4 Ciracas to provide a solution through a community service program specifically for the elderly. This program was also held as a form of commemoration of World Nurses Day which fell on the previous two days, namely May 12.

FoN UI Serving chaired by Ns. Utami Rachmawati, with 40 service team members, visited PSTW Budi Mulia 4 Ciracas to provide education to 80 elderly people regarding the importance of ROM exercises. The series of FoN UI Serving activities began with gymnastics with the elderly led by a team of volunteers and representatives of the elderly. Gymnastics takes place in the orphanage’s field which is quite wide.

The ROM education and demonstration session which was the next series was guided directly by Ns. Bambang, a gerontic nurse (elderly specialist) and also a service team who accompanies the participants while guiding the elderly to follow the movements being demonstrated.

This community service activity is funded by the Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment at the University of Indonesia (DPPM UI) through the 2023 PPM UI Grant program and RSUI also participates in funding and media partners.
