A number of lecturers from the Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia (FoN UI) introduced the Community Service (Pengmas) program in the form of Peer Empowerment (Persebaya) to prevent suicide among teenagers.
“The phenomenon of suicide that is prone to be carried out by teenagers is the background for the promotion of this program,” said Head of Community Service FoN UI Prof. Dr. Budi Anna Keliat at the UI Depok campus, Monday.
According to him, the intervention in the Persebaya program is to stimulate the psychological growth and development of adolescents followed by the formation of peer leadership.
FoN UI involves teachers in mentoring youth and continues with mentoring and assessment from the FIK UI community service team and the Mulyaharja Health Center.
Through the Persebaya program, FoN UI lecturers strive to build youth’s self-confidence. It is hoped that this activity can reduce the desire to commit suicide which is a sign of early symptoms of psychiatric problems prodroma early psychosis.
The activities that have been carried out involve a team of experts in the field of mental nursing, including Prof. Dr. Budi Anna Keliat, S.Kp., M.App.Sc ; Ns. Ice Yulia Wardani, S.Kp.,M.Kep.,Sp.Kep.J and Ns. Giur Hargiana, M.Kep., Sp.Kep.J, along with students of the 2018 mental nursing specialist program.
This activity collaborated with Pamoyanan Bogor Village and Mulyaharja Health Center which was carried out throughout April-June 2019 in 3 junior high schools in Pamoyanan Village.
Meanwhile, Pamoyanan Village Head Dodjo Widyarahardjo expressed his support for the Persebaya program as a form of concern for the FoN UI team to the Pamoyanan community, especially teenagers.
“The hope is that this program will continue to run consistently so that teenagers have new knowledge in knowing themselves and their environment, especially their peers so that it helps teenagers in resolving conflicts they experience and can indirectly reduce the number of suicides among teenagers,” he said.
