Supporting Disaster Mitigation in Banten,
FoN UI Conducts Education on Improving Disaster Preparedness

The Banten Province is an area that is often shaken by earthquakes that have the potential to cause a tsunami, friends. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded the Banten Provincial Government to immediately anticipate earthquake and tsunami disasters in the region. Some of these earthquakes even include earthquakes that have a destructive nature, because they have an impact on the collapse of buildings around the epicenter and trigger high sea waves.
 
Disaster risk management efforts are continuously carried out and improved. One of them is through disaster mitigation education to the community around Banten. The Community Service Team of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia (FoN UI) with the support of funds from the UI Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment, carries out community service activities in areas that are at risk of disasters. This activity was carried out on Monday, August 15, 2022, involving around 65 students at SMPN 3 Labuan located in Banyubiru village, Labuan District, Pandeglang Regency, Banten with the theme “Teenagers on Disaster Response Alert”. Adolescents are the right target to develop disaster preparedness because they have a high curiosity to continue to increase knowledge and change behavior. The FIK UI Community Service Team brought 3 topics as the main discussion, namely Disaster Mitigation, Basic Life Assistance, and Procedures for Selection of Hoax News. This activity was not only carried out with material presentations but also direct demonstrations from the FoN UI Community Service Team.
 
Banyubiru Village, Labuan District, Pandeglang Regency is a coastal area with a score of 24.00 on the tsunami risk index, 36.00 on the flood risk index, and 21.60 on the earthquake risk index. Based on this data, the FoN UI Community Service Team went directly to provide increased preparedness through the “Team Preparedness for Disaster Response” movement.

“This increase in preparedness is very important because the counseling provided increases our awareness to be even more alert in dealing with disasters, especially in this area,” said Ahmad Yugo, Deputy Principal for Curriculum Division at SMPN 3 Labuan.
 
The enthusiasm and enthusiasm of the students was also seen during the counseling activities. This is marked by students who actively answer questions, volunteer to practice Basic Life Support, and understand the meaning of hoax aloud. This activity was also well received by the Principal and the teachers of SMPN 3 Labuan
 
At the beginning of the activity, students received a goodie bag with the contents of the “Teenagers on Disaster Response Alert” pocket book. This book is given with the aim of equipping students to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired and to share them with others around them. Before giving the material, pre-test and post-test were also carried out after the discussion session to determine the target of understanding and understanding the material that had been previously presented. The average results of the pre test and post test showed an increase in knowledge and basic life support skills. This activity was closed with a photo session with the teachers and students of SMPN 3 Labuan. The students of SMPN 3 Labuan conveyed a positive impression of the presence of the community engagement team.
 
“Thank you for the material provided. Brothers teach it fun. We are happy with the presence of the brothers and sisters,” said the student representative of SMPN 3 Labuan.

This activity was led by FoN UI lecturer Ns. Ice Yulia Wardani, SKp, M.Kep, Sp.Kep.J., together with other FoN UI lecturers, namely Dr. Tuti Nuraini, S.Kep., M.Biomed, Poppy Fitriyani, S.Kp., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.Kom., and regular undergraduate students of FoN UI Asma Mabrukah, Ghini Alfikra, Tazkia Imanda, Tiara Nurjanah, Tiara Azzahra, Nusaibah Meili Karimah, Maisya Putri Nibenia, Hasna Khairunnisa, Asy-Syifa Khoirunisa, and Nadya Ahyani.
