The Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia (FoN-UI) has returned to serve the country through the Community Service program with the theme Formation of Nurse Ethical Behavior based on the Study of the PPNI Code of Ethics and Florence Nightingale’s Philosophy in nursing services. This Community Service aims to help shape the ethical behavior of nurses in Depok Hospital. Through this community service, a nurse’s work culture can be realized that prioritizes ethical behavior. “The formation of nurse ethical behavior needs to be familiarized through the work culture of nurses,” according to Tuti Afriani, S, Kp., M.Kep in a workshop on Thursday (25 July 2019).
Nursing is a noble profession. If the relationship of mutual trust between nurses and patients is good, then patients will be guaranteed to get safe and quality services in accordance with the professional rules contained in a code of ethics for the Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI). This code of ethics is a reference for nurses to behave well when providing services such as The Lady of Lamp, Florence Nightingale who dedicates herself entirely to helping others by displaying her ethical behavior.
The increase in the ethical behavior of nurses at the Depok Hospital is a continuation of community service that was carried out by the Department of Basic Nursing and Basic Nursing (DKKD FoN UI) in 2017. who are health literate and demand nurses and other officers to provide satisfactory health services,” said Tuti. This activity is in line with the “friendly, fast, comfortable”/Race Man program which was launched by the Director of the Depok Hospital in early 2019.
The Community Service Team for the Establishment of Ethical Behavior is chaired by an ethical expert in nursing and a lecturer at FoN-UI Dr. Krisna Yetti, M.App., Sc and its members Dr. Hanny Handiyani, S.Kp., M.Kep, Tuti Afriani, S.Kp., M.Kep. The service also involves students of the Master of Nursing Study Program specializing in Nursing Leadership and Management at FoN UI, namely Dyah Fitri Wulandari, S.Kp, Ns. Nurhayati Insani, S.Kep, Ns. Laras, S.Kep, Ns. Putri Nilasari, S.Kep. The Community Service Team carried out a series of activities in accordance with the DRPM UI Community Community Service Grant Contract No.: NKB-1260/UN2.R3.1/HKP.05.00/2019 and will end on December 6, 2019.
The community service series uses Kurt Lewin’s planned phase of change, namely unfreezing, moving, and refreezing. Unfreezing is done through a meeting with the Director of the RSUD to discuss the hospital’s needs that are in line with the ethical behavior of nurses. The moving phase was carried out by the community service team together with the nursing team at the Depok Hospital through the activity of compiling instruments and reviewing the ethical behavior of nurses based on the PPNI Code of Ethics and Florence Nightingale Philosophy, seminars and workshops on ethical behavior of nurses attended by 45 nurses at the Depok Hospital, compiling a book as a reference for the Hospital in forming ethical behavior of the nurse, and the final evaluation of the activity. The refreezing phase requires continuous supervision based on the manual until ethical behavior is uniformly established across all nurses and is corroborated in individual nurse performance indicators that are assessed over time. “This community service activity is intended for the head of the room and the team leader because it is hoped that there will be follow-up from the head of the room and the team to make a program to improve the ethical behavior of nurses. In addition, in preparing for the National Hospital Accreditation System (SNARS), Depok Regional Hospital nurses were trained to simulate ethical problem solving in hospitals,” said Tuti.
Director of Depok Hospital, Drg. Asloe’ah Madjri, MKKK welcomed and supported FIK UI community service activities with open arms and emphasized the importance of continuing FIK UI community service at Depok Hospital. “Incidentally, Depok Regional Hospital will implement the National Hospital Accreditation Standard (SNARS) in August 2019 so that this community service really helps increase the enthusiasm of Depok Hospital nurses before accreditation begins,” he added. The implementation of nurses’ ethical behavior by applying 4 ethical principles as professional nurses (respect to others, compassion, advocacy and intimacy) is certainly in line with the hospital’s ideals.
The formation of the ethical character of nurses based on the study of the PPNI Code of Ethics and the Florence Nightingale Philosophy in Nursing Services will be implemented if this program is continued with continuous and integrated routine activities in every activity at the Hospital. It is hoped that the ethical behavior of nurses will be increasingly felt by the people of Depok who receive nursing services at the Depok Hospital. In the end, Depok Regional Hospital will become a hospital that is increasingly favored by the Depok community with its friendly, fast, and comfortable service (Race Man).
