Physical fitness is one indicator of a person’s health status, with a healthy and fit physique we can perform activities optimally and reduce the risk of health problems, especially non-communicable and degenerative diseases. This was conveyed by the Head of the Community Nursing Department, Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia (FoN UI), Ns. Poppy Fitriyani, M.Kep., Sp.Kom in community service activities (Pengmas) at SMP PGRI Depok II Central, Depok.
“We conducted a fitness test on teenagers in this junior high school, because fitness is one indicator of a person’s health.” said Poppy during community service activities.
Furthermore, Poppy explained that the community service activity by the Community Nursing Department of FoN UI this time aims to prevent obesity in adolescents by inviting teenagers to like sports and do physical activities through health education and physical activity together.
The community service activity with the theme ‘Realizing the Golden Generation through Healthy Brave Youth’ has been taking place from November 29 to December 12, 2019 with a series of events starting from fitness tests for school children from grade VII to grade IX, education about balanced nutrition, and the importance of physical activity for teenagers. This activity was carried out in collaboration with FoN UI and SMP PGRI Depok II Tengah.
“We welcome and are very grateful for the community service activities carried out by FoN UI, because children (students) need to know health information to maintain their fitness to stay healthy and optimal in learning.” said Drs. Puji Haryanto, Principal of SMP PGRI Depok II Central.
Considering that Indonesia currently tends to experience a double burden where obesity continues to increase, on the other hand there are also many who are malnourished, for this reason, adolescent health checks are also carried out in the same activity by measuring the height and weight of students. Thus, it is hoped that both students and teachers in schools are more aware and care about the importance of maintaining fitness, physical activity, and consuming healthy food. This is in accordance with the Indonesian government’s program through Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 2017 concerning the Healthy Living Community Movement launched by President Joko Widodo.
