The Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia (FoN UI) is committed to educating adolescents to be able to maintain adolescent reproductive health. This time, the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing FoN UI held education for Lombok teenagers to fortify teenagers towards free sexual behavior that could lead to unwanted pregnancies.

This community engagement, chaired by Sri Yona, S.Kp., M.N., Ph.D, is motivated by the high number of cases of early marriage in Lombok. This is caused by several factors such as the lack of understanding of adolescents about adolescent reproductive health, the existence of the internet which leads to pornography so that it can plunge teenagers into free sexual behavior which has an impact on unwanted pregnancies.

“Physically, the bodies of pregnant women under 18 have a high risk of abortion, malnutrition and non-optimal fetal growth and the risk of stunting in those born,” Sri Yona said.

Sri Yona, said that since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the number of early marriages has increased in Lombok, including East Lombok. According to Sri Yona, the existence of early marriage in adolescents will have a negative impact on adolescents, both physically, mentally, and socially.

“Therefore, teenagers need to be briefed on efforts to maintain adolescent health in order to become healthy teenagers,” he said.

The community engagement team consisting of Prof. Dra Elly Nurachmah, MAppSc., DNSc, Prof. Dr. Yati Afiyanti, S.Kp., M.N., and Dr. Rita Ismail previously conducted community service activities entitled “Adolescent Empowerment in Efforts to Maintain Adolescent Reproductive Health in East Lombok, NTB”. Community service activities began with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving Lombok youth, aged 13-14 years. The Focus Group Discussion was held in an offline hybrid in the laboratory room of SMPN 1 Pringgabaya, East Lombok and via zoom (online), last August.

During the activity, Sri Yona and the community engagement team were actively involved in discussing with the youth about the problems they were experiencing. A total of 9 UI nursing masters students, specializing in medical surgery, were involved as activity facilitators, including Lalu Ahmad Habib Kairussyar’i, I Made Sumaharianta Radin, M. Haris Faisal, Agus Joko Purwanto, Yuniyas Ihsanidar, Irmariani Irbar, Chaera Mayasari, M. Mulyadi , and Vika Endria.

Education on adolescent reproductive health was also held at the Pringgabaya sub-district office, East Lombok.

The Head of Pringgabaya Sub-district, Nasihudin, who opened the event, welcomed the first activity held by UI in East Lombok.

“Currently, the rate of early marriage and stunting in Lombok is quite high. With this community service activity, we hope to increase the understanding of teenagers about efforts to maintain reproductive health and avoid pregnancy outside of marriage,” he said.

Participants involved in this activity are also equipped with soft skills, such as conscious and navel checks. The service team also educates parents so that the role of parents is more optimal in helping teenagers grow into healthy and productive teenagers.

“We emphasize the importance of the role of parents, especially open communication with teenagers so that they can avoid the negative behavior of their peers and also avoid the bad effects of other teenagers’ sexual risk behavior,” he said.
