Labuan Bajo is one of the favorite tourist destinations in Indonesia. The reason is because of its natural beauty, from the side of the island, the beaches to the diverse beauty of the sea. In addition, the beauty of Labuan Bajo can also be seen from some of its beaches which are used as diving or snorkeling spots. Domestic and foreign tourists often need a tour guide to guide the tourists while in Labuan Bajo. Therefore, tour guides need to know how to travel safely for themselves and tourists.

As a form of strengthening safety culture, the academic community and FoN UI alumni together with Komodo Labuan Bajo Hospital and the West Manggarai Regency Tourism Office carried out community service for Labuan Bajo tour guides with Basic Life Support (BHD) and First Aid (P3K) training in Labuan Bajo Hospital on Tuesday (13/9).

“Labuan Bajo is indeed beautiful, don’t be amazed by its beauty but ignore health and safety,” said the Head of the Tourism Office, Mr. Pius Baut, SE.

Tour guides are analogous to “The Soul of Tourism” and have an important role in the success of tourism activities in the region. Tour guides in Labuan Bajo are the “first person/agent” in the case of tourists experiencing this emergency, so that insight is needed for tour guides in handling these conditions appropriately. The service team themselves travel to tourist attractions in Labuan Bajo as tourists so they are able to identify potential risks and dangers that threaten health and safety while traveling. Tour guides have obstacles including many tourists who force themselves to travel in Labuan Bajo. This requires collaboration with health care facilities in conducting health screenings before traveling by asking for medical history, looking at non-verbal responses, and educating tour guides.

The chairman of the Indonesian Tour Guides Association in Labuan Bajo, Mr. Sebastian, said that currently Labuan Bajo has 400 tour guides who need this related training. In this activity 13 tour guides in Labuan Bajo have been given training in Basic Life Support and First Aid in Accidents to tour guides. The team first presented the material related to the training topic, and then one by one the tour guides who were participants simulated Basic Life Support activities into props and practiced First Aid in Accidents.

“Tour guides are very enthusiastic about this activity because this activity is considered very much needed by tour guides as one of the skills that need to be possessed,” said Ns. Shanti Farida Rachmi as the head of the service team from FoN UI. The participants also really hope for the continuity of this activity. As a forum for sharing information, the service team and participants join a group on communication media to share information and discussions related to handling the health and safety of tourists in Labuan Bajo. This activity is fully supported by the UI Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment.
