Children’s learning activities at school require a comfortable environment and free from diseases caused by infections. If an infection occurs, the child will suffer a lot of losses, such as not attending school, not being able to attend lessons and being ostracized by friends for fear of being infected. Promotive and preventive efforts to prevent infection in order to improve the health status of the nation and society can be carried out by implementing clean and healthy living behaviors, especially in the school environment. The Community Service Team of the Faculty of Nursing, University of Indonesia, led by Dr. Hanny Handiyani, S.Kp., M.Kep took a role in this promotive and preventive effort by conducting community service activities at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Depok with the activity title “Multimodal Strategy to Break the Chain of Infection in School Children”.
This activity takes place from August 2019 to December 2019. It is hoped that through this community service activity we can break the chain of infection in the school environment by providing hygiene and health support facilities, providing health education, evaluating clean and healthy understanding and behavior, providing reminder media in schools. school environment and create a safety climate in schools as recommended by WHO in the Multimodal Strategy. Multimodal strategy has proven to be an effective component of infection prevention and control programs according to WHO Guidelines.
System changes were made by improving hand hygiene facilities, improving waste management facilities, and improving UKS facilities. Education and training is carried out by providing education to break the chain of infection in schools about healthy behavior to prevent infection such as hand hygiene, five moments, cough etiquette, and waste management to homeroom teachers and students. Evaluation and feedback is carried out by evaluating knowledge and behavior to break the chain of infection, monitoring the completeness of supporting facilities, perceptions and knowledge while providing feedback on results. Reminders in the environment are carried out by encouraging and reminding the school community about the importance of efforts to break the chain of infection by making reminder media such as hand hygiene posters, five moments of hand hygiene, cough etiquette, waste management, healthy behavior, and compiling a Multimodal Strategy book to break the chain of infection in children. school. Improvement of the safety climate is carried out by selecting School Health Ambassadors from students as role models for awareness of healthy behavior to break the chain of infection and implementing a reward system in schools.
The target achieved in the implementation of this Multimodal Strategy is the formation of School Health Ambassadors as motivators who have the knowledge, affection, and skills of the Multimodal Strategy to break the chain of infection in schools, transforming awareness, commitment, willingness, knowledge, affection of the school and students about Multimodal Strategy to break the chain of infection in schools, the mobilization of schools and students to participate in the implementation of the Multimodal Strategy to break the chain of infection in schools, improvement of hygiene and health facilities in schools as an effort to break the chain of infection in schools, the existence of reminder media in the school environment as an effort to break the chain infection, and the creation of a safety climate in schools as an effort to break the chain of infection.
